This Alberta Private Investigator Course (AIT) was developed by Security Training Subject Matter Experts in consultation with industry and legal experts to meet or exceed all government standards and is government-approved for persons desiring to work as a private investigator in the Province of Alberta.
How To Become A Private Investigator in Alberta
There are 4 steps to become a licensed private investigator in Alberta.
Check to make sure you meet the basic requirements for the licence.
Complete your Alberta Investigator Training (AIT) 60 hour online course.
Pass your proctored online government exam.
Apply for your Security Services licence as a Private Investigator.
Requirements For Private Investigator License
Here are the basic requirements for a private investigators license in Alberta, as laid out in the Security Services and Investigators Act:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Fluent in speaking English. (Level 5 benchmark)
- A Canadian citizen or legally entitled to work in Canada.
- No serious criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.
- No outstanding criminal charges.
- Not the subject of a criminal investigation.
Other Important Qualities and Skills
The following qualities are also important to have. These are skills that you can continue to learn and grow in. You will develop these skills on the job, and by taking more training!
- Integrity – have good morals
- Honesty – be truthful about all things
- Accountability – show up to work, and if you can’t work, to tell your supervisor
- Availability – available to work different shifts
- Communication skills – be able to understand what others are saying and speak to them so they can understand you
- Interpersonal skills – friendly to other people
- Conflict resolution – can find solutions with people who are angry or emotional
- Emotional groundedness – can stay calm and don’t get easily angry or emotional
- Mental alertness – can pay attention to little details and stay alert during your shift
- Courageous – be willing to talk to people who are committing an offense
- Grow – ask questions if you don’t know what to do
- Good health – be able to stand or walk for hours if necessary

What Do Private Investigators Do?
You must be licensed to work as a private or in-house investigator in Alberta. As an investigator you investigate things like:
- accidents and personal injury
- damaged or stolen property
- backgrounds and whereabouts of people
- organizations
While investigating you:
- collect information
- interview people
- conduct surveillance
- obtain statements
- research reports or records

Alberta Private Investigator Course Curriculum
This online Investigator Course consists of nine (9) modules. Students must complete all modules, logging a minimum total of 60 hrs and then the online Provincial exam under the supervision of a proctor with 80% or above to receive provincial certification and apply for an Investigator License in Alberta.

You may apply for your Alberta Investigator License. The investigators licensing fee is $160. Your licence is valid for 2 years. This is paid directly to the government with your application.
